news pictorial

Mr Jan Gort of Nairobi Hospice Hollande visited the Coast Hospice on 24 October 2006, during his holiday in Mombasa with his relatives and friends. Mr Jan and his friends very generously donated the following to the Coast Hospice:

1. One Thousand US Dollars
2. An automatic Blood Pressure Machine
3. An automatic Thermometre

Refurbishment, Furniture
and Vehicle grants

The past one year has seen Coast Hospice transform from a two roomed unit at the Coast General amenity clinic to a fully fledged clinic with two fully furnished constant rooms, a pharmacy, reception area and a lounge.

This facility was availed by the general hospital management. With the help of Hospice Care Kenya, the facility was refurbished, furnished and fenced. The Hospice is now more accessible and comfortable for the patients.

The hospice has recently acquired a vehicle, through a donation from Hospice Care Kenya.

Coast Hospices wishes to thank the board of Hospice Care Kenya and their supporters for their continued support as well as the management of Coast General Hospital.

Coast Hospice Palliative Care Teams

During the last two years, the Hospice Care Kenya has generously given Coast Hospice a grant to carry our Palliative Care Training. Three training sessions have been held: and fifty health workers have been trained on palliative care. As a result of the training, we have been able to start six palliative care teams in Kilifi, Kwale, Malindi, Voi, Hola and Mombasa.

Currently, the teams are involved in counseling, and homevists. A direct consequence of the training has been an increase in the referral of Cancer and HIV/AIDS patients from the District Hospitals to Coast Hospice.

The Coast Hospice Board is seeking to be considered by the National Aids Control Programme as a centre for dispensing antiretroviral drugs.

Recently, the Chair of the Coast Hospice visited the following teams:

Malindi District Hospital
Carolyne Acholla, Clinical Officer
Naomi W Mskula, Nurse
Emily K Yulu, Nurse

Voi District Hospital
Mathias Gabriel, Nurse
Christine N Musau, Nurse
Milka Muhoro, Nurse

The teams were very happy with the visit and they look forward to becoming fully fledged satellite hospices.

The Board is currently seeking funding for the Satellite program.

Coast Hospice recently received their annual drug donation from Nairobi Hospice Holland. Many thanks to Mr Jan Gort and the Board and supporters of Nairobi Hospice Holland for their continued support of the Cost Hospice.
